Shale Gas - Project

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Shale Gas Industry in the Karoo: Prof Doreen Atkinson and Prof Mike de Jongh, both Trustees of the KDF, participated in a major study of the implications of shale gas mining in South Africa. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) managed a large team of scientists, which examined a total of fifteen different topics related to Shale Gas Mining. This project took about a year to complete, from mid-2015 to mid-2016.

Prof Doreen Atkinson's team analysed the potential impacts of Shale Gas Mining on the Social Fabric of the Karoo. This team included Dr Karin Badenhorst (NMMU), Prof Rinie Schenk (UWC), Dr Zachy Matebese (UFS), Dr Ike Umejesi (Fort Hare) and Prof Louwrens Pretorius (University of Pretoria). The report can be accessed here.

Prof Mike de Jongh (who is also a Professor Emeritus at UNISA) participated in the Sense of Place chapter, which can be accessed here.

Another KDF Trustee, Dr Judy Maguire of Prince Albert, was a corresponding author on the Heritage chapter of the CSIR Shale Gas report. See here.
